Why is Comcast lacking in their DVRs?

Digital Video Recorders have come a long way in recent years. What started out being dominated by a single brand (TIVO) has now become pretty diverse.

I love my DVR, I really couldn’t live without it. It’s a Comcast box, I have Comcast broadband and Digital Cable, while the DVR is good it’s not up to par with the other players in the DVR Market.

Comcast is competing with Verizon and TIVO who both offer DVR Service with a few bells and whistles like scheduling recording over your phone or computer. The interface leaves more than a little to be desired too.

Apparently, according to Comcast this is all in the works but why has it taken them so very, very long to get it in place? As one of the largest media companies in the country I’d have thought they’d be more on the ball.

Hopefully Comcast is taking it’s time to go a step or two beyond the current standards. I don’t see them partnering with Netflix, they have their own online streaming in Fancast.com (also Netflix streams to TIVO) but i hope they’ll work on streaming media, online scheduling, suggestions, the interface, and more.

What do you think? do you have suggestions for Comcast and their DVR Service?

  • Based on my experience with Comcast Cares they do care and when they worked out a problem with my internet service they went by the numbers ! The seven people at Mr Eliasons Office do the work of a hundred they are a model for customer service ! Now Andy I a not a DVR user so I can't comment but I am sure if DVR Services are a profit center they are working on it ! I rarily defend the people I do business with but most companies have growing pains ! The fact that you got an answer is an example , they care ! Also they are beefing up their Web Based E Mail and it is good ! I use their Plaxo it has really improved since they Partnered with Plaxo ! Mr Eliason is a pretty smart Dude ! http://www.eliasonfamily.info/blog/?p=158

Thank you for the suggestions. I will make sure that it is passed on to the appropriate department for evaluation.

  • I don't think most people will switch services because of a DVR, and those that would are the same people that would buy a TiVo or use Boxee. I think DVR is something everyone has to have, but it isn't something that really drives subscriber growth.
