Only £1/month for Unlimited Music?! (Internet Tax)

The Isle of Man (where I grew up) is working on a new music licensing program for it’s residents.

The concept being an Internet Tax (yes, stand back aghast) which will cover copy written content on the Internet.

Content owners would have to register themselves and their work with some kind of a central agency letting them share in a part of the revenue from the tax.

It’s a….nice idea, maybe a little socialist but it could just work.

This isn’t a new idea, it has been hovering around the cloud for some time, Napster tried it and countries in Europe already do this for Television with Television Licenses.

The plan is working it’s way through the Manx Government (the Island sets it’s own Laws).

It makes a lot of sense really, paying producers per download is fair and would hurt piracy as well as fairly compensating those who need to be.

The Isle of Man with it’s 80,000 residents would be an ideal location to give this a shot too.

Recording companies don’t seem to have had much to say on the tax and of course there are groups who are standing on both sides of the idea. Opponents are claiming it would be unfair to those who want to just use the Internet and not download music.

What do you think of an Internet Tax?
