California gets hit rather hard by Wildfires each and every year. This year’s season is expected to be a doozy.

Google Maps is already helping to track the progress of Wildfires in California.

Tom Moore, Online Editor at the Santa Cruz Sentinal, whipped together a Google Map that is being updated by the Sentinal staff regularly to reflect his local area being affected by Wildfires.

Already, it has seen more than half a million views!

The map covering an area between Swanton and Bonnie Doone in the Santa Cruz Mountains  is being updated using crowsourcing via a discussion feed.

Excellent use of Google Technology. Wouldn’t it be nice though, if it was the local authorities and not the local media who got a jump on this first?
