Hard-hats Required.

Hey there! We’re busy adjusting some things under the hood here at TechBurgh - so you may see some oddities like layout bugs, missing posts, strange comments and test bits.

We’ll be running again at full force as soon as we can. Thanks for the patience!

Google Releases MapMaker

image Because it would be very, very hard for Google to map the entire world, they need your help.

Google has released Google MapMaker.

The idea behind the Google MapMaker is that users in countries outside the US can create markers for business, places of interest etc.

Google has made it more a WIKI than anything else.

Disposable Camera=Emergency Strobe

image

Indestructables.com is a really cool site with some neat ideas.

This is one of those situations that you never want to be in but, if you were it would be simply stunning and you’d likely come out a hero.

Indestructables has an article on how to turn a disposable camera into an emergency strobe and all in 7 easy steps.

Apparently it’s written by a 15 year old too (?!)

Apple ordering 15 million iPhone 3Gs

image

Apple is officially trying to saturate the mobile market when it brings it’s iPhone 3G Unit next month.

According to AppleInsider Apple has raised it’s order to 15 million units.

At a price point of only a couple of hundred dollars Apple is once again going to rock the mobile market and hopefully cause the competition to (again) rethink what they’re doing.

New, sexy domains?

ICANN will soon be voting on two major new domain proposals.

1. Making the very text in domains more international, adding the capabilities to have Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic text

2. Allowing the use of more character  -letter and number combinations up to 64 characters.

This would, pretty much cause the entire world to go crazy and there would be an absolute rush on Domain names and a whole lot of registrations and squatting.

In theory, upon the approval of these new rules I could register http://www.blog.techburgh meaning that anything that has the extension ‘.techburgh’ is a part of the TechBurgh entity.

ooooh or I could register TechBurgh.blog - now there’s an extension that will be sought after.

Of course, the Adult Industry will go nuts assuming any of this happens. The ‘.sex’ and ‘.xxx’ will be allowed and there will be a total rush for them

Which domain extension would you like to see and why?

Should you be paid to check your email @home?

There is an interesting article posted on LifeHacker regarding whether you should be paid overtime to check your email at home.

Apparently ABC News Writers are demanding overtime pay because they’re being forced to take their work home with them.

I can see their point. I’ve been there and done it. Depending on your position it can be necessary to extend your work out of the workplace but it can be unfair to you and your family too.

I found the vote attached to the article most interesting of all though. (as of right now)
31% say yes.  38% says no - then there are a couple of others we don’t need to look at.
The percentage claiming not does so because they check their personal email at work and do other personal things making the work/home/work trade fair.  Wow.

I wonder how that poll would change if it were posted on Gizmodo for example.

Is this showing a more lax workplace? is the work/home divide blurring that much more?

Moo Cards Grow

The folks at Moo.com have long been known for bringing us business cards of diminutive sizeMooCardsNewCards.

After a great deal of hassling from their ever-so-dedicated customers Moo has broadened their product line and brought out cards that are twice the size of the old ones.

One of the nice things about Moo is the fact that they’re really, really different.

You have the ability to add pictures from your online galleries and your contact information from LinkedIn, which is pretty slick.

See the Moo Crew promo video after the jump.

You Vs. the Credit Cards

image Credit cards can be evil if you don’t have the right one and if you don’t know how to use/tame them.
Sadly Credit Cards have become a necessary evil, somehow they’ve become a part of actually building your credit score.

CreditCardsClub.com is a handy (and most importantly, friendly) web site that  helps you with everything Credit Card Related.

From balance transfer credit cards to Business Credit Cards, from ‘bad credit’ cards to prepaid cards they cover it all and have a nice icon and description right on their front page for each.

The site is packed with information too, everything from information about Card Issuers and banks to FAQs and tips. Credit Cards Club will take you through the processes involved in choosing a credit card, they’ll explain FICO scores, what to do and what not to do.

The site is worth checking out even if it’s just for the artistic icons :)

Network Solutions: PerformanceClicks!

image Network Solutions is promoting a new pay per click program called PerfornceClicks!

Building on the fact that people use search engines for most of their web browsing (difference between ‘browsing’ and usage) Network Solutions is offering to pretty much take over your whole Google Adwords marketing campaign for a monthly fee.

There are a couple of packages available, which we’ll go into later.

Atlantic BT - Web Design

image

Atlantic BT is a charlotte web design company that I stumbled across today.

It’s their portfolio that caught my eye for the most part.
You find that when you look through different portfolios from different design companies (which I find myself doing a lot), some of the sites get to be very…..samey.

This one was worth looking through though. A lot of the sites in the portfolio are fresh and set themselves apart from the same old web stuff.

Take a look if you need inspiration or pretty good web design services.
