On November 3-4, 2015, Jana’s Campaign, based in Hays, KS, is hosting its domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and educational programming in Kansas City with the Heartland Campus Safety Summit. Verizon has partnered with Jana’s Campaign for the summit’s third annual meeting by providing an $15,000 HopeLine grant.
Jana’s Campaign is bringing its third annual summit to Kansas City with an important goal: continuing gender-based violence education in America’s Heartland.
With a grant from HopeLine from Verizon, founders Drs. Christie and Curt Brungardt are able to provide two days of training to college staff and students, helping break the cycle of domestic violence on college campuses.
The Brungardts, who lost their daughter Jana Mackey to a domestic violence incident in 2008, are passionate about educating as a vehicle for gender-based violence prevention.
“Understanding both how to prevent and how to address gender-based violence is critical on college campuses and we believe easy access to educational program is an integral step in this process,” said Curt.
Choosing to hold the summit in Kansas City when it began in 2013 was essential for the Brungardt’s mission to bring gender-based violence to an end. They said that Kansas City’s central location allows them to reach an audience that typically doesn’t have easy access to these types of conferences.
“Kansas City is full of outstanding colleges and universities that have the potential to lead the way in reducing and preventing gender based violence,” said Curt. “With the support of HopeLine and Verizon, we are able to bring national experts and exceptional resources to America’s Heartland to continue to educate folks on ending gender-based violence.”
This year’s summit will also include a second annual pre-summit – a day of workshops on November 3, 2015, followed by the screening of The Hunting Ground. The documentary film is an exposé of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, telling the stories of Annie E. Clark and Andrea L. Pino. Annie and Andrea will be in attendance, personally leading a discussion after the screening and presenting the keynote speech on November 4, 2015.
