RJ Lee Group, Inc., industrial forensics laboratory headquartered in Monroeville, Pa., has donated a scanning electron microscope (SEM) valued at $75K to the Oak Ridge, TN campus of Roane State Community College (RSCC)in Tennessee.”One of the fundamentals of our corporate mission,” noted Dr. Richard J. Lee, President and CEO of RJ Lee Group, “is to continually advance science. As a small company, we are passionate about education and this gives the student the ability to get immediate feedback. They see the elements and that inspires scientific inquiry.” The SEM will play a key role in a new certificate program in composite materials technology funded by a federal grant received as part of PSCC’s involvement in the 10-college National STEM Consortium.
Commenting on the donation, Dr. Gary Goff, Roane State President noted, “With the scanning electron microscope, students can discover real-world applications for the information they learn in the classroom. This discovery process inspires interest in STEM fields, which is crucial for the area’s workforce. We greatly appreciate this generous gift and the opportunities it opens for our students.”
Materials and Chemistry Laboratory Inc. (MCLinc) of Oak Ridge will provide samples and technical support for the SEM. “We are pleased to assist in this important project,” said Barry Stephenson, president and CEO of MCLinc. Roane State chemistry professor Dr. Ronald Sternfels said that both companies’ donation of time, technology and resources gives student a unique learning opportunity. “In a typical lecture, you are group learning,” Sternfels said, “with this, students drive their own discovery process. There is nothing like personal discovery to spark the quest for knowledge.” RSCC student, Ethan Brown of Lenoir City, commented, “The microscope makes the theories you hear in the classroom come together. It puts together the pieces of the puzzle.”
Roane State Community College is a comprehensive public, two-year, post-secondary institution serving the higher education needs of an eight-county area in eastern Tennessee. Currently, more than 6, 500 students are pursuing two-year associate degrees or academic certificates in a range of health science programs as well as business management, office administration, police science, and other fields.
