I’ve picked this topic completely out of the blue.. there’s no specific reason for my writing it at all.
Ok, that’s not true. Those who know me know why I’m taking my time to write this today – others will just have to guess I’m afraid.
I’m irked.
I’ve seen Facebook pages containing advertisements touting their pages services setting up a Facebook page to promote other businesses.
Yes… the page touting the page for business services. This isn’t a company page, this isn’t an individual’s page. It’s more of a.. well… news page.
Just because you run a Facebook page it by no means magically makes you a marketer.
It takes just a couple of clicks to set up a Facebook page, a 5 year old can do it.
It’s free.
Put up a picture of a pretty girl, or post some semi-controversial content, sound opinionated and you’ll likely get a few fans. Maybe even some comments.
It’s really not hard.
The trick is to do it right.
Facebook and Facebook pages are tools – like any tool box they’re (hopefully) not the only tools at your disposal.
Tools all work best when used correctly, together and for the right purpose.
I might have a little problem with my car, grab a hammer and go to the garage to see what I can do to fix it – of course, I’m not a mechanic.
Sure! have “some guy” set up a Facebook Page for your business. Have him “run” and “maintain” it.
Just like I could run a Facebook page on how to fix cars. I’d write all day long about how to use a hammer to fix any problem – but then, I’m not a Mechanic.
The trick is to learn how to use the tool correctly, for the right purpose, for your purpose.
“But I don’t have time to run a Facebook Page!” Wrong, wrong, wrong. You do have time to manage some sort of Online presence. Maybe you don’t have time to post to your page (and other sites) all day, every day, but there’s always time to maintain it and use it.
I don’t know of any circumstances in which a company or organization needs to bring in an absolute stranger to “run” their Facebook Page for them.
If someone wanted to know about what your business does would you hand the phone off to someone on the street and say “hey, talk to this person for a second”?
It only takes minutes to find a local Inbound Marketing Professional (yes, there are qualifications) and only minutes more to listen to their suggestions for how you should best handle your own online presence.
It doesn’t have to cost a lot, heck it could even be free if you attend a PodCamp, TweetUp or other Social Media-type gathering.
Do you have any questions about your Online presence? Do you need a Facebook page? Drop me an email or comment here. I can help you out. (qualifications and recommendations available )
